The largest theater house of the Azores – Coliseu Micaelense – thoroughly decorated with Carnival motifs to host two Grand Balls, one on Friday, and another on the Monday before Mardi Gras.
This tradition has been going since 1921 and, according to it, people dress up as they would for a Gala: Women in long dresses and men in tuxedos. It is common practice to bring a basket decorated with the season’s motifs, in which you carry your food for the night.
