Lent Pilgrimage

From the first Saturday of Lent to Holy Thursday thousands of men (men only) walk along the Island of São Miguel. This pilgrimage — or many pilgrimages — are a sixteen-century tradition of this island alone have expanded beyond the island’s borders in recent decades.

The purpose of these pilgrimages, made with prayer and sacrifice, was to implore for God’s mercy and be spared from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and other natural horrors.
