Nuno Álvares Pereira, also known as the Saint Constable, was a Portuguese nobleman and military who became famous in the succession crisis of 1383-1385, which opposed Portugal to the kingdom of Castile and lasted until 1411. Considered as one of the greatest strategists and Portuguese military commander of all time, Nuno Álvares Pereira fought and won all battles, even though the army he led had fewer men than the enemy, being the greatest victory of all the one at Aljubarrota on the 14 of August of 1385, the same year he was named the Constable of Portugal and the Master of Avis was acclaimed King of Portugal.
He was beatified by the Church on January 23, 1918, and canonized on April 26, 2009, by Pope Benedict XVI. He is the patron of the Portuguese Infantry.
