The Azores comprise 9 islands of essentially volcanic formation and, therefore, have a vast and diverse geoheritage that can be seen and visited, in most cases, on several places of the islands. It also has a rich underwater geoheritage that can be seen, in some cases by boat or by diving.
In addition to visits to these geosites, it is also important to observe the influence of geodiversity on the architectural, cultural, artistic, and ethnographic heritage, both past and present.
Ponta Delgada is filled with geosites waiting to be discovered. There are several lava flow sites that you can find along the coast.
At Rocha da Relva observe several geological features along a trail that will take you to a small hamlet, only accessible by foot.
At Ferraria experience a unique phenomenon and bathe in a natural pool in the sea that gets hot when the tide is low.
The most iconic site of the county in terms of natural beauty is undoubtedly the volcanic complex of Sete Cidades, formed more than 36,000 years ago. This place is considered one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal.
