Ajuda da Bretanha’s Corn Fest

The Festa do Milho (Corn Fest) is an annual event held in the civil parish of Ajuda da Bretanha, but the civil parishes of Remédios and of Pilar also take part in it.

Its organization is a joint effort between Norte Crescente – Association for Local Development – and the civil parish of Ajuda. This event’s main goal is to salvage and divulge the ancient agricultural traditions linked to corn.

The event’s program is full of activities and part of it is the traditional husking of the corn evening, which is done the way it was by our ancestors.
In it, one reminisces the old Corn Route, which starts with the catching of the corn, its transportation in the old bullock carts, and an ethnographic parade up until Pico Vermelho’s windmill, where it is then left to be ground.
