Roberto Ivens

He was born in the parish of São Pedro, in Ponta Delgada in 1850, and died in Oeiras, in 1898. He was the son of Robert Breakspeare Ivens, an Englishman, and Margarida Júlia de Medeiros Castelo Branco, from São Miguel. Roberto Ivens was a descendant of Thomas Hickling, the first consul of the United States of America in the Azores.

Together with Hermenegildo Capelo, they explored the interior of the African Continent in the nineteenth century. The bust was made by Marina Rato, from José Moreira Rato's workshop (1860-1937), and was initially placed at Relvão and then moved to the current location on January 26, 1950.
