EXPOSIÇÃO O HORIZONTE INSUBMISSO – RESSONÂNCIAS ENTRE O SAGRADO E O TEMPO

SINOPSE

Inserida no programa da Capital Portuguesa da Cultura 2026, a exposição intitulada O Horizonte Insubmisso – Ressonâncias entre o Sagrado e o Tempo oferece uma leitura crítica e espaço para a reflexão sobre uma importante parte da coleção de arte da Câmara Municipal de Ponta Delgada. Reunindo obras dos séculos XVII ao XXI, o pensamento curatorial não se circunscreve a qualquer linearidade cronológica para desvendar continuidades, ruturas e sobreposições entre diferentes épocas, linguagens e contextos. Organizada em cinco núcleos, a exposição acompanha a transformação da imagem – da ordem instituída pelo sagrado à crise da identidade, da afirmação da matéria à espessura do tempo histórico e ao presente como espaço de tensão. Em Ordem do Visível, o sagrado organiza formal e espiritualmente o olhar normativo; em O Rosto em Crise, a identidade clássica fragmenta-se em pura fricção psicológica; Corpo da Imagem marca a transição da representação para a presença física da matéria; em No Tempo Longo, confrontam-se sobreposições históricas; e por fim, Matéria em Combustão liberta o presente como gesto insubmisso. Como eixo simbólico do discurso expositivo, o sino de bronze do século XVIII articula a permanência do sagrado com a duração histórica e faz ressoar diferentes tempos. Mais do que apresentar uma coleção, o curador refere que esta exposição “não oferece conclusões” – a imagem afirma-se como um campo de pensamento, onde o tempo não se limita a passar: permanece ativo, produzindo novas leituras e novas perguntas.

THE UNSUBMISSIVE HORIZON – RESONANCES BETWEEN THE SACRED AND TIME

SYNOPSIS

Included in the programme for the Portuguese Capital of Culture 2026, The Unsubmissive Horizon – Resonances between the Sacred and Time presents a critical analysis and space for reflection on a significant part of Ponta Delgada City Council’s art collection. The exhibition brings together works from the 17th to the 21st centuries. The curatorial approach is not confined to any chronological linearity, seeking instead to reveal continuities, ruptures, and overlaps between different eras, artistic languages, and contexts. Organised into five sections, the exhibition traces the transformation of the image: from the order established by the sacred to the crisis of identity, from the affirmation of matter to the depth of historical time, and to the present as a space of tension. In the section “Order of the Visible”, the sacred organises the normative gaze, both formally and spiritually; in “The Face in Crisis”, classical identity fragments into psychological friction; “Body of the Image” marks the transition from representation to the physical presence of matter; “Deep Time” brings historical overlaps into confrontation; and, finally, “Matter in Combustion” liberates the present as an act of defiance. As the symbolic axis of the exhibition discourse, the 18th-century bronze bell expresses the permanence of the sacred across historical duration, causing different times to resonate. The curator notes that this exhibition “offers no conclusions”; the image asserts itself as a field of thought in which time does not merely pass but remains active, producing new interpretations and new questions.
